Ron L. Hubbard, who created Scientology, also wrote a lot of sci-fi before doing the Scientology thing. I suspect he was a big fan of 2001 and Clarke because his religion (from what I've heard) resembles 2001's loose suggestion that life evolved by the purposeful interference of extraterrestrials.
