Look from my experience with Erickson....
Yes he is a drunk, he did get a DUI in '95 and to my knowledge hasn't stopped drinking-he was still drinking back at OSU
Yes he brings in questionable players, but I think he has changed a bit, at Miami those guys
were thugs. At OSU I think they were just labeled thugs because of DE's past and the fact that the players got tons and tons of penalites-mostly personal fouls. But off the field from my experiences they were great guys. Examples- Chad Johnson, his childhood was hell and he had very hard times and is thus labeled a bad guy, but he actually he is very nice and doesn't cause off the field problems. Another example, Dennis Weathersby who was shot just before the NFL draft, he seemed like a great guy with a bad past. I think Erickson has changed from recruiting pure thugs to "thugs" who really aren't thugs but just live like them. But don't let the internet idiots fool you, he will bring in playmakers and will have ASU winning. And winning quickly with juco transfers-which just btw the I love juco transfers, what a life saver-sorry off topic. I'm not joking, if DE can somehow stay at ASU for 5-10 years (I know its a near impossibility) but probably a half the pro bowl roster will be from Tempe. You think Todd Heap, Jake Plummer and Terrell Suggs are anything? Just wait.
Yes DE is unloyal, correction he is loyal to whoever is willing to pay him the most. Expect DE to say he "is retiring in Tempe" only to leave for like the Cardinals a week later. But whatever, winning is worth it right? haha
Through all this, the problems I see him facing is 1. Does he have connections in Arizona? He sure had connections in the Northwest so we'll see. I also wonder if recruits will question his loyalty, but I think he will be fine there. As well he is 59...how will that affect things.
Also, people make fun of his NFL record but look-At the Seahawks, a franchise that had absolutely no winning tradition and were frankly bad, he went almost .500 despite that which for Seattle should have been good enough. At the 49ers, lets be honest that was the a HORRIBLE franchise, the owner was not willing to pay ANYONE (kind of like how he still doesn't pay anyone) and once again despite that he went 7-9 in his first year. Besides DE is a recruiter, and in the NFL there is very little recruiting especsially when your owner is a stiff.
Once again, there is no guarantee he will have success...but he has two national championships won at a permier school, then has a fiesta bowl for a team that was absolutely horrid three years prior-and that year OSU were somewhat screwed by the BCS and should have been in the title game. Add that with success at Wyoming and Idaho and you made a believer out of me, I don't know about you.
but....ASU: Watch out though, at OSU he left the cupboards bare before he left, he did leave some quality skill players (Newton, Jackson and Anderson-all likely NFL starters at skill positions) but he left no depth and the rest was nothing
As for your forum-
Thats the typical outsiders view on DE, he is no role model but I think he deserves some credit for giving people 2nd chances (even if it is for his own benefit) and he isn't as bad as people think he is.
I found this pretty accurate though haha:
