It didn't figure to be easy for Stanford on Thursday night, and it was not. But style points were not necessary.
The Cardinal needed to win, and win it did. Stanford beat Arizona State 63-53 at Maples Pavilion, and that might be enough to get the Cardinal into the NCAA tournament.
Of course, a victory Saturday against Arizona would virtually guarantee Stanford a ticket to the Big Dance. But before the Cardinal could think about Saturday, it had to survive Thursday.
Arizona State (7-21, 1-16 Pacific-10) brought the conference's worst record to Maples, but it hadn't been playing like the conference's worst team.
