Playoff system

I'm not a big fan of the BCS and have wanted a playoff system for a while now. That is, until I saw a little debate with the Gameday crew and heard Kirk Herbstreit make some rather interesting points. I thought I would get some opinions and see what you all think of having a playoff system.

I suspect 95% of college football fans out there would want a playoff system. The BCS is flawed, it sucks, and as a Duck fan UO has now been screwed twice.

yeah, after learning more about the BCS this year, I think so. Not just because it screws the pac-10 a lot, but take the whole conference championship thing with the Big 12, for example - that seems the most messed up to me of it all.

Those conference championship games are atrocious.

one of the announcers (don't know who) on the BCS bowl selection show today was defending the BCS system, saying something like, "we have a playoff system, folks, it's called the season and it starts in October".

I wonder if he realized that he completely vindicated Oregon's case for going to the Fiesta, being 10-1....since playoffs would go strictly off of wins. oh the irony.

If a playoff system was to be used this year - what would it look like? Who would play who? Does anyone know what it might look like? just curious how it would work.

Simple. Use the BCS computers to determine the Top 4, 8, 16 etc. teams who qualify. If the top 8 were to qualify, this years line-up would be:

USC vs Miami
Texas vs ND
Penn St vs Georgia
OSU vs UO

It's so simple, that it just might work. hmmmm.*finger to mouth* Now all we need is some duck tape, some chewing gum and a paper clip......

See thats the thing that isn't so simple to me. It's just kind of pushing it down the line. Instead of having three or four teams vying for #1 & #2 in the BCS Championship, now you have anywhere from 10-18 teams vying to get into the final 8 playoff spots. I don't know what would be best and I have normally leaned towards playoff, but part of what makes college football so special is the bowl season. I don't know if the playoff would lessen that or not.

It seems entirely too simple. That's what kills me about it.

Here we have the pro's which is this totally money-infested orginization. And then you have college ball..which is supposed to be about the game. I hate that $ has taken some of that out of the game. can't they just play and not have to deal with all this malarky?!

I would much rather have a controversy over who may or may not be the eighth or sixteenth best team in the country then who is the top one two or three team in the country. The bowls are a tired and defunct system. Why not keep some of the bowls for the teams that don't make the playoffs? I see they still have an NIT Tourney during the NCAA Basketball Playoffs.

at the beginning of this year athlon sports i think had the best idea.....
they proposed that there should be a tourny. taking the 32 best teams and incorporating the bowls into the tourny. i think that is the best idea so far and like was said earlier just have like a N.I.T. for some of the smaller teams

Sounds like a great idea. The irony is that everything about college football is money these days and a playoff would be a huge cash cow. The College Presidents don't want one. Mooooooo

Oh the list of excuses in long, tired, and so full of holes that you could drive a truck through.

Excuse #1: The season will be too long for the kids.
#2: Interupt school work
#3: Too much pressure put on the student athlete
#4: Preserves the sactity of the bowls (WTF does that mean)
#5: Bowls are reward for a successful season
#6: All regular season games remain important
#7: The regular season is a playoff
#8: Don't mess with tradition

I know I have heard a few others, but this is a list of several that I remember off the top of my head. A thought by anyone with half a brain can see the fallacy of every one of these excuses. It is nice to know the NCAA is protecting all our D-I athletes and not giving a damn about D-IAA, D-II, and D-III athletes.

so if it would be a cash cow, what's the real reason they don't want to do it? politics w/ the BCS?

I really don't have answer for that. I suspect it is politics and that the Presidents want to at least give the illusion that football is played by bunch of idealic student athletes who reflect everything that is good about college football and college in general. Although just about everyone views college football for what it is, a money producing cow for athletic departments and an NFL farm system. I really don't know.

I like the bowls, they showcase teams that were successful during the year, the BCS however needs to be fixed.
