INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Four current University of Oregon athletes paced second-day action Thursday in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, and Finish Line USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held at the IU Michael A. Carroll Track Soccer Stadium on the IUPUI campus. In senior event action, senior Matt Scherer won the third of four heats in the men's 400-meter prelims (45.43). The Sumner, Ill., native stood fourth overall and tops among collegians behind Darold Williamson of Nike (first, 45.05), Andrew Rock of adidas (second, 45.11) and LaShawn Merritt of Nike (third, 45.26). Scherer's time Thursday was his fifth straight sub-46.00 clocking and eighth in 10 outdoors races this season. He was only .24 seconds off his personal best (45.19) that won the Pac-10 Championships in Eugene in mid-May - a mark that ranks him second all-time for UO behind former world record holder Otis Davis (44.9/45.09c).
