BEIJING, China - In the second day of the World Junior Championships, University of Oregon freshmen Matthew Maloney and Rebekah Noble competed in the men's javelin prelims and women's 800 meters semifinal, held Wednesday at the National Olympic Sports Center. In the women's 800m semifinal, Noble finished third in the second of three sections (2:05.56), and was only .52 seconds behind heat winner Anzhelika Shevchenko of Ukraine (first, 2:05.04) and Aicha Rezig of Algeria (second, 2:05.45). Noble's time ranked fifth-fastest of the 24 competitors, and the leading time came in the third heat by Eastern European Crista Olga of Moldova (2:04.76) - the only competitor to run sub 2:05.00 in the second round. The NCAA outdoor runner-up Noble qualified for Wednesday's races after she finished second in the first of four preliminary heats Tuesday (2:08.97), and now has a day off from competition before the event final, Fri., Aug. 18.
