BEIJING, China - In the first day of the World Junior Championships Tuesday, University of Oregon freshman Rebekah Noble advanced in the preliminary round of the women's 800 meters, held at the National Olympic Sports Center. The Spokane, Wash., native Noble finished second in the first of four preliminary heats (2:08.97) and was only .37 seconds behind section winner Elizet Banda of Zambia (first, 2:08.60). Emma Jackson of Great Britain clocked the fastest time among the day's 37 entrants and won the second heat (2:05.68). Among other Oregon-affiliated athletes that competed Tuesday, freshman-to-be A.J. Acosta ranked eighth in his third of three preliminary heats in the men's 1,500 meters (3:50.11). Acosta's heat was won by Ali Belal Mansoor of Burundi (3:43.50) in the fastest time in the prelims, while the first and third heat winners were Kenyans Remmy Limo Ndiwa (3:50.22) and Geoffrey Kipkoech Rono (3:44.90), respectively.
