| Sanchez Accused Of Sexual Assault Bad story all around, no need for anyone to celebrate about this. If true some poor women had a terrible injustice, if false a young man will have a blemish on him he can never take back...Might hurt USC a bit though with Booty hurt and Sanchez possibly suspended/off the team. Quote:
LOS ANGELES -- USC freshman quarterback Mark Sanchez was released from jail on Thursday after he was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a female student, authorities said. Sanchez, 19, was released Thursday around 12:10 am on $200,000 bail, according to Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Ban Nguyen.
Sanchez was arrested on suspicion of committing sexual assault around 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Cardinal Gardens apartment complex near campus, said Officer Jason Lee of the Los Angeles Police Department. "According to investigators, a female USC student alleged that she was sexually assaulted at 12:30 a.m.," Lee said. "The case is in the preliminary stages and under investigation."
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound Sanchez, a graduate of Mission Viejo High School, redshirted during the 2005 season and is second on the team's depth chart behind John David Booty heading into the upcoming season.
An employee of the 901 Club who asked not to be identified told the Los Angeles Times that Sanchez was at the club Tuesday night. The club's security cameras show Sanchez entering the bar around 11:20 p.m. using a fake Arizona ID, the newspaper reported.
"We're just learning about this," Trojan coach Pete Carroll, who was out of town on a recruiting trip, said in a statement. "At this point, this is being handled by the university's Student Affairs office, and we'll follow along with whatever action the university takes."
Sanchez has been placed on "interim suspension" while the case is pending, according to Michael Jackson, USC's vice president of student affairs. "The university takes charges of sexual assault seriously," Jackson said in a statement. "Depending on the facts as established by the LAPD, we will determine the appropriate action."
Sanchez's roommate, linebacker Brian Cushing was also arrested but was later released at the scene. Cushing was asleep when the alleged assault of the student, who lives in the same building as Sanchez and Cushing, took place, the Daily News reported.
The newspaper also reported that Sanchez was detained by campus security last month -- but not arrested -- for allegedly breaking a window at a fraternity party.
Sanchez's arrest is the latest in a series of legal troubles for USC football players. Cornerback Eric Wright was arrested March 26, 2005, on suspicion of rape, but no charges were filed.
In August 2004, police investigated a sexual assault at Cardinal Gardens, where the football team stayed during training camp, but no arrests were made. Also in 2004, offensive lineman Winston Justice pleaded guilty to exhibiting a replica firearm, a misdemeanor, and was suspended by USC, missing two semesters.
